Welcome to the Box Moor Trust Teacher's Pack. This has been written with the teachers who have already booked a visit in mind. However, it may also be useful for teachers who have yet to book a visit, or for uniform group leaders and youth leaders.

Please make sure you have read through this information before coming on a visit.

If you want further information, please contact us.

The Box Moor Trust was established in 1594 to manage land purchased by local inhabitants for fishing and grazing. The original land has been added to over the years and its usage has changed over time. The main purpose of the Trust now is to manage for the public benefit land extending to over 450 acres. We maintain, improve and add to these lands for the use and enjoyment of the people in the area and provide environmental education facilities.

Most of our education is based around the Old Barn Education Centre, a converted barn with an indoor classroom and an outdoor shelter where students can eat their lunch if the weather is not at its best. We also have plenty of open space for students to use at lunchtime.

We have use of woods, meadows, wetland areas and specifically designed areas for education.

Our education facilities have been specifically designed with the health and safety of our visitors in mind. It is still essential however that students come prepared. In the interests of health and safety, we require at least two members of staff/adult per 15 children to accompany you on your visit. When you visit the Box Moor Trust, we ask that you take responsibility for your pupils throughout.

We have chosen to put this Teacher's Pack online and it is sent out as a CD-Rom instead of in paper form.

It is our policy to limit the use of paper wherever possible to reduce resource depletion and contain our costs.

Whilst the majority of this Teacher's Pack is for information purposes, we do recommend that you print out the risk assessments and bring these with you on your visit.

Teaching staff accompanying the students will be responsible for their behaviour at all times. Field staff will be happy to hand over the lead role at any point during the day if deemed necessary for the smooth running of the visit.

In order to maintain our beautiful site, in the interests of safety and the interests of all the plants and animals that live here, we place a strong emphasis on respecting the environment.

We very much appreciate your support with this and ask teaching staff to discuss the following issues with the students prior to your visit.

After lunch, we will ask you to take part in our Waste Free Lunch Challenge.

We will ask your class to divide their lunchtime waste into four bins. These will be for things that can be composted, things that can be reused, things that can be recycled and finally waste. We will then weigh your waste and work out how many grammes per child your class has left behind. At the end of the year, the class that has left the least rubbish will be awarded a prize.
