Our Education Courses

The diverse nature of the Box Moor Trust estate allows us to offer a very wide range of learning opportunities, covering many areas of National Curriculum and examining body requirements, including Science, Geography, Art, English, Maths, History and Citizenship. We also provide seasonal and bushcraft courses.

All age groups can be catered for, from Foundation Stage children coming for a half-day visit to 'A' level students working independently on field projects over several days.

Our Education Facilities

At the Box Moor Trust, we have a diverse range of habitats, including woodland, meadows, ponds, rivers and urban areas.

All of the Box Moor Trust land can potentially be used for visits but the majority of courses take place in the vicinity of our Old Barn Education Centre using Hay Wood and the surrounding meadows and ponds. We use our land bordering the River Bulbourne and/or the River Gade for river studies, whilst our local heritage and urban geography courses centre on the moors in the valley bottom.

Health and Safety

Our education facilities have been specifically designed with the health and safety of our visitors in mind. It is still essential, however, that students come well prepared. Further information on suitable clothing, footwear, etc. can be found under 'Your Visit'.

Your Visit

Arrival

Schools arrive at the Box Moor Trust Centre on London Road unless specific arrangements have been made with us in advance. On arrival, please report to the Box Moor Trust Centre and ensure that children are kept in a group, off the car park area.

Schools visiting for river studies will be advised about the specific requirements for these courses.

Transport

If you require a coach for your visit to the Box Moor Trust, we have agreements with local coach companies for special daily rates. Please contact us for more information. Coaches can park in the Box Moor Trust Centre car park for the day.

In-School Visits

The Box Moor Trust can also visit your school during the autumn and spring terms for assemblies or classroom sessions.

Education Ethos

As part of education at The Box Moor Trust, we aim to:

Provide environmental education for both those living in the Area of Benefit and interested parties outside it.

We will post or email a booking form or, alternatively, you can download the form below. If you are visiting on more than one occasion, please fill in one form for each separate visit - do ensure that you have reserved your visit date with the office before you return the booking form.

Code of Conduct

The Box Moor Trust staff organise activities for their maximum educational value and will support your class in a supervisory role. The senior teacher from your school is in charge of the class and is responsible for discipline throughout the day. However, the Box Moor Trust staff reserve the right to exclude pupils who display dangerous or disruptive behaviour.

To maintain our beautiful site and in the interests of safety and the plants and animals that live here, we place a strong emphasis on respecting the environment. We very much appreciate your support with this and ask teaching staff to discuss the following issues with pupils prior to your visit.

Our Eco-Code

At the Box Moor Trust, we are doing everything we can to minimise our impact on the environment and to educate our visitors on how they can do the same.

Under our Eco-Code:

We will reduce, reuse and recycle our waste and minimise our use of resources
We will use less environmentally damaging products
We will minimise our water use
We will minimise our energy use
We will protect and encourage our wildlife and plants
We will teach our visitors to live more sustainably

Visitors can look out for the signs around the Old Barn Education Centre showing what we are doing and what they can do to help.
