What is the role of a Trustee?

Running a charity is very much like managing and directing any business: commitment, relevant knowledge, clear thinking, a team ethos and enthusiasm are all essential.

The Box Moor Trust has been guided by committed local people since it was created in 1594. The skills and backgrounds of its Trustees have changed and evolved as time has moved on and as the Trust has grown, and the breadth of its work on behalf of local people has developed to match the changing patterns of farming, education and recreation. The increasing concern about climate change and the decline of species has brought a new dimension. The ideal Board has a mix from a whole range of abilities with business, charity and environmental backgrounds.

Trustees are people who care passionately about the community of Hemel Hempstead and Bovingdon and who recognise the vital contribution that the local landscape makes to the area’s prosperity, and the quality of life of everyone living and working here. Because of the Trust’s significant role in the area’s future, being a Trustee is a position of influence and responsibility – for this and generations to come.

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the Box Moor Trust, its main purpose is:

  •  To set and monitor the strategic direction of the charity;
  •  To ensure the charity is properly managed and complies with all relevant legislation, accepting ultimate responsibility for the sound professional, legal and financial management of the Trust;
  •  To ensure financial sustainability, approve the annual accounts and agree all major decisions;
  •  To set policies for the governance of the charity, to regularly review health and safety and to monitor, guide and authorise the work of its sub committees.

Trustees attend the majority of Board meetings and are expected to be a member of at least one sub committee. A chart of the sub committees will be included in the information pack. Here you can play a key role on a subject of your interest, whether it is a particular skill in the workplace, a cause or a hobby. If you wish to stand as a Trustee please contact us on [email protected] and we will send you an application pack.
